POSTCARDS FROM BAGDAD is a joined project between the German photographer Vincent Haiges and the Iraqi photographer Hussain Muttar. On the occasion of TARKIB Baghdad Contemporary Arts Festival 2019 Vincent Haiges presented his photography series POSTCARDS FROM BAGHDAD. A portray of the people in places which are neglected and forgotten. A portray of places, in their strange contradicting state of past richness and present poverty. Together with Hussain Muttar he selected six of these places in Baghdad. In the festival Vincent Haiges showed the portraits as photographs as well as as postcards with messages from the people in the places. For the booklet, Hussain Muttar, ambitious to architecture and cityscape photography, took from each of these places a cityscape photograph and add a description about the place.

Bagdad Contemporary Arts Festival 2019

TARKIB – Baghdad Contemporary Arts Festival is Iraq’s only multi-disciplinary arts festival. The annually festival takes place on four days in April and connects audiences to the city’s contemporary and independent arts.

The heart of TARKIB Baghdad Contemporary Arts Festival is the visual arts program with a group exhibition dedicated to new multifaceted room-installations and conceptual artworks from emerging Iraqi artists.

Its focus is directed to artworks that form a boundary between arts and everyday life, explore new socio-cultural spaces, work interdisciplinary and interactive. Presented artworks are distinctive of critical thinking and future-oriented perspectives. Every year the festival is launched in a different location. TARKIB breaks new ground by using non-traditional sites and spaces with the aim of bringing both audiences and artists together to engage with the city of Baghdad in a new way.

The festival features musical interventions, contemporary Iraqi poetry, theater performances, talent shows and Open Projector Nights showcasing experimental and short films by young Iraqi filmmakers.
